366W5996_deforestation.jpg Deforestation of rain forest on Fiji. Rainforest acts as a massive carbon sink sequestrating huge quantities of carbon as the trees grow. Chopping down rainforest not only feeds carbon into the system but also vastly reduces the planets ability to absorb carbon.

366W0672_climate change_stream.jpg A woodland stream in the Urho Kehkkosen National Park near Saariselka Northern Finland. Climate change has already raised average temperatures by 0.7 oC over the last century. Winters are getting both warmer and wetter and in Southern Finland winters are becoming increasingly snow free. As permafrost melts across the Arctic huge quantities of carbon dioxide and methane could be released leading to even further warming. Such iconic winter scenes could in a relatively short space of time become a thing of the past.
