IMG_5555_urban wildlife.jpg Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis molucca) in Sydney Botanical garden, Sydney, Australia. The breeding success of these wading birds has been negatively imacted by low water flows, as a result of climate change induced drought.

IMG_7546_friends.jpg On Saturday 6th March 2010, Melbourne was hit by the worst tropical storm they had experienced in over 100 years. It started with a hail storm, with hail 12cm across (the size of lemons) followed by torrential rain. $millions of damage was caused and many of the cities streets were flooded causing chaos to transport. Whilst they were glad of the water in this drought stricken land, it seems yet further evidence of the impact of climate change which is resulting in more severe weather in many areas.

IMG_1528_tree planting.jpg Sand Martin Wood in Faugh near Carlisle, Cumbria, UK, was acquired by the carbon offset company co2balance in September 2006. It has been planted with a broad mix of native trees over 6 hectares and is managed for wildlife as well as the companies offset clients. Though seen as controversial by some carbon offsetting is one way of a company or individual to reduce their emissions, as the trees absorb and sequestrate carbon as they grow. This shot shows a plaque with information about the person who requested the offset by planting a tree.

366W6704_ilulissat.jpg A house in Illulisat on Greenland. Ilulissat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the Jacobshavn Glacier or Sermeq Kujalleq which is the largest glacier outside Antarctica. The glacier drains 7% of the Greenland ice sheet and produces enough water from calving icebergs in one day to provide New York with water for 1 year. Climate change has meant the glacier has speeded up and is now one of the fastest glaciers in the world at up to 40 metres per day and is also receeding rapidly
