Peat Bog Peat forms in boggy ground where instead of decaying the dying plant matter is preserved in the anaerobic conditions and builds up over time to form peat. Peat bogs are carbon sinks and lock up huge quantities of carbon that would otherwise end up in the atmosphere. In the UK, peat tends to form in cooler environments. Research has shown that as the earth warms the carbon budget of peat bogs is being affected, with carbon and methane (both greenhouse gases) being released in greater quantities than normal.
