Forest Fires As the planet warms many areas of woodland are becoming drier. In hot summers tinder box conditions can rapidly lead to devastating forest fires. Not only does this destroy vital habitat, it exacerbates the problem by releasing vast quantities of C02 into the atmosphere. It also poses a threat to human life and property. In the summer of 2004 an area of forest the size of the UK burnt in Alaska
